Jo Grey, MSS, LSW

Jo (they/them) is a licensed social worker who earned their master's degree in clinical social work from Bryn Mawr College. They are a nonbinary trans person who has lived experience of being neurodivergent, queer, disabled, and living with mental health challenges. Jo has been in recovery (& actively involved in recovery communities) for more than 20 years. They are also a therapy client (since they were young), which informs their perspective as a therapist.

Jo is a pluralistic & person-centered therapist who prioritizes being neurodiversity-affirming and providing trauma-informed care. They value collaborating with clients & adapting their approach depending on what clients feel they need, want, & are best served by. Jo respects that clients are the experts on themselves & their truth(s), and reliable reporters of their own experience. They believe that it's necessary for therapists to remain flexible & responsive to shifts in the client's preferences, comfort, & boundaries, and they welcome feedback about what isn’t working, or doesn’t feel helpful.

Jo's intention is to create the conditions for clients to feel able to speak the truth, take up space, ask for what they need, and experiment with new ways of being in relationships with others & themselves. Their wish is that clients will feel seen, understood, respected & believed. Jo does not believe that they can promise a “safe space”, because only clients know what feels safe, but their hope is to foster a “safe(r)”, or “safe enough” space for folks to be authentically themselves, and to feel supported & not alone in the process.

Jo’s areas of interest include: self-compassion / boundaries / fat acceptance & fat liberation / attachment / self-trust / acceptance & change (both/and) / codependency / practical spirituality (meaning, purpose, wonder) / hope / identity exploration / personal values / unrecognized grief & loss / healthy sources of peace, ease & pleasure / mindfulness / freedom / connection & community / harm reduction / relationship with ourselves / authenticity / practicing the disciplines of joy, fun & humor.

Jo is an animal lover, a vegan, a food enthusiast, and a homebody. In their free time, they like to attend online Buddhist recovery meetings, take walks (look at trees & sky), listen to podcasts, connect with friends, watch comfort tv shows, & hang out with their cat.
